IS THIS AN EMERGENCY?

Do you have any of the following symptoms?

If so, call 911 or other emergency services immediately.

 

IF:

Breathing stops for longer than 30 seconds. (It takes about 30 seconds to say the Pledge of Allegiance THREE times!)
    After calling 911 or other emergency services, begin rescue breathing.

The seizure itself lasts longer than 3 minutes.

The seizure happened in the water.

If you aren't positive that the person has epilepsy, or it is their FIRST seizure.   
(Look for a Medic Alert bracelet)

Signs of a serious illness are present, such as:

  • Fever or shaking chills. 

  • Severe headache with stiff neck, confusion, or irritability.

  • Very rapid, difficult breathing.

  • New, tiny purple or red spots (petechiae) show up on their skin.

  • A Sudden increase in the number of bruises and how severe they are (purpura).

If more than one seizure occurs within 1 hour or a second seizure starts shortly after the first has ended.

    This applies both to someone having their first seizure and to a person with a history of epilepsy.

 

1 hour after the seizure the person is not responding normally, that is:

  • They are not "fully awake".

  • They are confused.

  • They have nausea or are vomiting.

  • They are dizzy.

  • They are unable to walk or stand.

A seizure occurs after a sudden, severe headache.     
(This could be a sign of a subarachnoid hemorrhage- bleeding in the brain.)

A seizure occurs with ANY of these symptoms:

  • Inability to move (paralysis) a part or all of one side of the body (such as the face, arm, or leg) or persistent numbness.

  • Loss of vision in one or both eyes.

  • Confusion or altered behavior, such as unusually aggressive  or combative behavior.

  • Inability to speak, difficulty speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.

  • Severe dizziness (vertigo) and vomiting.

  • A seizure follows a head injury.

 

If a pregnant woman has a seizure. (This could be a sign of toxemia of pregnancy (eclampsia). )

If a diabetic has a seizure.   (This could be a sign of very low blood sugar.)

If a seizure occurs after:
